What You Need To Know About Our Strategy Sessions
At Sachs Law, we start every potential client relationship with an initial Strategy Session or case review meeting. This way, we can ensure that we understand why you believe you need a lawyer and we can explain the laws that apply, or do not, apply to the circumstances.
Our goal is to have you come away from the session with an understanding of the legal principles that apply in your case, what your rights and obligations are, and what options and strategies are available to you.
We know legal advice is costly. That’s why we look for the most efficient and cost-effective ways to assist you in reaching a positive outcome.
Sometimes, depending on the circumstances and your case, we may recommend we fully review your file for a flat fee before accepting your case.
Our business is providing legal advice and it’s tough to justify giving it away for free. During this initial strategy session (or case review), we provide you with legal advice including an assessment of whether or not you have a case. Many people find that valuable, whether or not they decide to retain us afterward.
Our paid Strategy Sessions include up to one hour in a meeting with a lawyer and a review of the background of your legal issue for a fixed fee of $500 plus HST, or $565.00.
We may ask you to send some documents in advance of your meeting but please don’t send any documents until we request them.
No. The Strategy Session poses no obligation to continue working together unless we both agree to do so. If you are interested in retaining us after the session, we will provide you with our retainer letter for you to sign and ask for a trust deposit to begin the work. The amount of the trust deposit may vary from client to client depending on the circumstances.
The retainer letter sets out our rights and obligations to each other in order for us to move forward with your legal issue.
We discuss the terms of a retainer with Sachs Law during the initial Strategy Session.
As a small office, we find the resources required to finance a case on contingency usually requires third party financing. However, we may consider a contingency arrangement under the right circumstances. In order for us to assess those circumstances, it is necessary to first have an initial Strategy Session.
We are flexible in our billing and representation arrangements where such flexibility is required and it works for both of us. Certain tasks may be arranged on a fixed fee or limited scope arrangement. Our estate drafting work is largely done on fixed fee and we are working toward setting fixed blocks for litigation work for your ease and ours.
Prior to your meeting, we will request that you provide us additional information through our intake forms and we may request to review some documentation before we meet with you.
In addition to the time spent reviewing information provided by you in advance, we’ll discuss your situation, explain the law, analyze how the law may apply to your situation and discuss your options and strategies, in addition to what to expect working with Sachs Law.
Most of our initial strategy sessions or case review meetings are by video conference, usually using Teams. This method allows us to meet with clients all over Ontario and sometimes even further. But we can also arrange for a meeting by telephone or in-person.
In-person meetings are held in an office at Yonge and Sheppard in North York, but we can also travel to the client. In certain cases with older adults, we may need to come to you. This may involve a travel fee, but that will be discussed with you at the time your at-home request is made.
Yes! We can accommodate payment plans of varying duration to pay the retainer or fees owing on your matter; however, the initial payment for our strategy session must be paid in full to book the meeting.
Regarding subscription plans, we are working to develop these options for certain areas of law. If this is something that you think would be helpful to you, we’d love to hear from you.
To proceed with your booking, please select an available appointment time, complete the form and make the payment to secure your booking.
Here’s a map of where we’ll meet you in-person if you come to our office. But please note we don’t accept any walk-in appointments and are not in the office except when meeting a client who has scheduled with us in advance.
We look forward to meeting you and assisting you along your legal journey.
